WOODS OF INFINITY (Swe): “Hopplös Väntan” MCD
(Supernal Music)

When the Swedish duo informed us that they had recorded a mini-album, I was not expecting the horrors I I eventually encountered in the master. Yes, this is WOODS OF INFINITY all the way through, complete with the usual deranged and suicidal wretchedness, menacing mixture of nostalgic innocence and imminent perversion, sick provocation, lugubrious dread, and twisted sarcasm. However, having enjoyed the last three albums, I was wrong to expect more of the same, for the material in "Hopplös Väntan" ("Hopeless Waiting") is a lot more dissonant and obscure than "Hampjarn" - it is, of course, brilliant and gloomily atmospheric, but to glimpse the brilliance you will need to play it a few times, as the gems are of a more oblique and convoluted kind, the melodies less obvious, the arrangements more tortuous. This will tickle the morbidity of the more cryptomaniacal listener, without a doubt, and turn them, perhaps, into untranslatable fanatics, unable to communicate their caliginous visions. The artwork is hazy and gloomy, a spectral forest scene, like a disturbed half-memory, or half-remembered dream, sinking into a fuliginous grey-brown - very appropriate considering the audial content. Although technically a mini-album, the six tracks mount up to over half an hour of playing time, so this almost like a full album. Reviewed by AK-47.
