EQUILIBRIUM (Deu): "Turis Fratyr" CD
(Black Attakk)

In the NOKTURNAL MORTUM review below I mention the radical conservatives that originated the Germanic ideology out of which eventually grew National Socialism after the Great War and the November revolution. EQUILIBRIUM is not a National Socialist band, but what they do, like a lot of German bands playing their kind of atmospheric, folky Black Metal these days, is another illustration of the fact that the ideas of Lagarde and Langbehn and Riehl and the Wandervogel have remained latent in German culture and have during the past ten years or so re-emerged and found expression in this excellent new crop of German Black Metal. I suspect the vast improvements we have noticed in the German scene, particularly in the last five years, have a lot to do with a spiritual re-connecting with Volkish roots, following five or six decades of trauma and negation. EQUILIBRIUM's music is quite similar to BAL-SAGOTH, but comparable also to ENSIFERUM, MOONSORROW, and FINNTROLL: loud and heavy, high octane, orchestrated synthesisers, epic melody. The label Viking Black Metal has often been used to describe this band, but this is not entirely accurate: the front cover, for example, is a green landscape reflecting Romantic sensibilities, and such sensibilities are also in evidence in the decorative capital initials that form the background to the lyrics in the inner booklet. There are Runes, of course, but the aesthetics are German, not Scandinavian. I very much enjoyed this magnificent and very well-produced album and, together with FJOERGYN, I believe EQUILIBRIUM are presently one of Black Attakk's best bands. Reviewed by AK-47.
