The Meads of Asphodel

Biography

THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL was formed in 1998 by Metatron (vocals) and Jaldaboath (guitar, synth), out of a desire to create heavy, guitar-orientated, original Black Metal with Mediaeval and Eastern influences, and a lyrical concept derived from Biblical Apocrypha, fallen angels, and Death. Since its hallucinogens-induced inception, the band has added two additional members: Urakbaramel (drums), and Zephon (guitar).

Composed and recorded with a casually iconoclastic attitude towards the accepted canons of Black Metal, their first 1998 demo, "The Bemoaning of Metatron", proved a slap in the face. Convinced that it would be met with amused smiles and dismissive shaking of heads, puzzlement ensued when magazines like Kerrang! lent them unexpected publicity and approving reviews.

A second demo, "Metatron and the Red Gleaming Serpent", followed shortly afterwards, only to be met with the same reaction. The momentum gained from this soon elicited label interest.

Preferring to remain in the underground, the band had already decided to sign with a small, obscure label, as opposed to a big indie. The band hence entered the Order of Supernal Music, Supernal Music having shown interest from the first demo.

The third and final demo, "The Watchers of Catal Huyuk" emerged in 1999 and was voted demo of the month in Kerrang! and Metal Hammer, and was awarded 9/10 in Terrorizer magazine. This came in addition to features in Metal Hammer and an interview in Terrorizer, and being voted one of the 10 best newcomers of the year in the latter magazine's annual readers' poll.

The long-awaited debut full-length, "The Excommunication of Christ", now due for imminent release, features guest appearances by A. C. Wild (vocalist of cult 80s' Black Metal band BULLDOZER), Huw Lloyd Langton (HAWKWIND's legendary former guitarist), Kobold (vocalist of OLD FOREST), and the English Goth/Electro band, HISTORY OF GUNS.

Although the music is not the stereotypical, fast, icy Black Metal with machinegun drums and chaotic arrangements, the band are nonetheless steadfast in their anti-Christian beliefs.

The album revolves around the concept of Jesus as a mortal man, and not the son of a god. The Christian faith is built upon myths and the Roman Church, a system designed to order and pacify, is as guilty of corruption, greed, power hunger, and atrocities as any other institution. Satan, in turn, is but an enemy manufactured to unite the masses in the face of a perceived common threat.

You need not destroy with wrath what you can destroy with truth.
